Reviews:
Elana Kochman's Versatile Humanism
Seen recently in the invitational exhibition "Beyond Borders: an Exhibition of Fine Arts from Canada," at Agora Gallery, 530 West 25th Street, Elana Kochman works in a variety of mediums: oil portraits with a stark insightfulness and a painterly succulence akin to Lucien Freud; large, linear hand embroideries on linen that appear "drawn" rather than sewn; acrylics on rusted metal and wood burnings on wood, in which these non-traditional art techniques evoke ghostly presences akin to those in faded sepia album photos. Kochman's large wood burning "Family" is an especially affecting example. Depicting different generations of an extended clan from the African Diaspora, posed frontally with a dignity that transcends their threadbare circumstances, it is at once a humanistic statement and a formal triumph.
