Gladstone Hotel and Gallery (Toronto, Canada) October 11- November 26, 2006  " Hand-Face-Body: An Exhibition of Tactile Textiles"        Reviews: Elana Kochman's Versatile Humanism Seen recently in the invitational exhibition "Beyond Borders: an Exhibition of Fine Arts from Canada," at Agora Gallery, 530 West 25th Street, Elana Kochman works in a variety of mediums: oil portraits with a stark insightfulness and a painterly succulence akin to Lucien Freud; large, linear hand embroideries on linen that appear "drawn" rather than sewn; acrylics on rusted metal and wood burnings on wood, in which these non-traditional art techniques evoke ghostly presences akin to those in faded sepia album photos.    Kochman's large wood burning "Family" is an especially affecting example.
